Interview with Ville Hellström, CEO, VILPE USA

Anne Cappel: Good morning, Ville. It’s great to have you with us. How are you today?

Ville Hellström: Good morning, Anne. I’m doing very well, thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here and to share VILPE’s story, our technology, and our plans for the U.S.

Anne: Let’s start with you personally. Can you tell us about your journey and how it led to VILPE?

Ville: Of course. I’m a 40-year-old Finnish business leader, a husband, and a father of two young children. I enjoy building things—teams, strategies, and solutions to complex problems. I’ve always been a bit of a tech enthusiast, and I love understanding how systems work and how data can improve decision-making.

My connection to VILPE goes back to university. I met members of the ownership family and current leadership team then. Friendship evolved into professional collaboration, and I came to deeply respect the company’s culture—long-term thinking, engineering discipline, and a genuine passion for roofing.

Joining VILPE wasn’t just about a job. It was about building something meaningful in an industry that often works quietly but is absolutely critical. Moving to the U.S. to lead VILPE USA is both a professional milestone and a family adventure. My wife and our two children moved with me—it’s a chance to grow personally and professionally while building a team in a new market.

Anne: For readers less familiar with VILPE, can you describe the company and the problem it solves?

Ville: VILPE is a Finnish industrial company with over 50 years of experience in roofing and ventilation. We’re now in our second generation of family leadership and still serve some of our earliest customers. That long-term perspective shapes everything we do.

At its core, VILPE solves a critical problem: protecting buildings from water damage and structural failure. Modern industrial and commercial roofs are complex—they host solar panels, HVAC systems, telecom equipment, and other penetrations. Each addition increases risk.

Traditionally, roofing has been treated reactively—repairing leaks after they appear. We take a proactive approach, combining deep roofing expertise with smart monitoring and leak detection. This allows organizations to shift from reactive repair to predictive protection.

The real cost of roof failure is operational disruption. Manufacturing lines stop, warehouses close, data centers are exposed. Our mission is to make roof performance predictable, measurable, and manageable, so leaders can protect assets and ensure continuity.

Anne: You are expanding into the U.S. at a time of uncertainty. Why now?

Ville: This is a planned, deliberate move.

We began structured planning for the U.S. more than three years ago, and leadership had been evaluating the market for over two decades. The timing is about execution, not reaction. While uncertainty exists, structural drivers—climate volatility, complex buildings, and operational continuity—make now the right time. Customer demand confirms it.

Anne: Roofing is often seen as maintenance. When does it become strategic?

Ville: The moment it threatens operations. Think of it like a car: ignoring a warning light might work for a while, but eventually, the engine—or in this case, operations—could fail. A leaking roof isn’t just a facility issue; it’s a business continuity risk. Production lines stop, warehouses close, data centers are exposed. Reactive maintenance limits options and drives costs higher. Managed proactively, roof integrity becomes an execution discipline that stabilizes operations, capital planning, and enterprise risk.

Anne: What risks are most often underestimated?

Ville: Visible catastrophic events, like storms, are disruptive but obvious. The real danger is slow, undetected water ingress. Small leaks can persist for months or years. By the time damage is visible, structural components may require major replacement. Costs escalate, disruption grows, and insurance claims become complicated. The invisible problems are the strategic problems.

Anne: How do companies typically come to VILPE?

Ville: Usually after a painful experience—a major disruption, unexpected repair, or insurance conflict.

Our systems often deliver measurable OPEX savings—lower maintenance costs, improved energy efficiency—but the primary value is risk mitigation. The real ROI is avoiding unplanned operational downtime.

Anne: How does your technology support leadership decisions?

Ville: Smart monitoring and early detection act like the oil-change light in a car—they alert you before small issues turn into major problems. Leaders can plan repairs strategically, forecast capital needs accurately, avoid emergency premiums, and protect uptime. Predictive maintenance consistently outperforms reactive approaches. By identifying risks early and removing roof-related disruptions from the operational equation, organizations can stabilize execution and protect overall business performance. This keeps the focus on predictive maintenance while making the concept relatable to a broad audience.

Anne: Looking forward, how will building envelope protection evolve?

Ville: It will become more data-driven and integrated. Just as leaders use telemetry for equipment and supply chains, building infrastructure should be smart and measurable.

An ecosystem is emerging: leak detection, lifecycle analytics, energy management, and sustainability metrics integrated into one holistic approach. Extending roof lifespan by even 5–15 years is a cost-effective, sustainable strategy. Delay means higher OPEX, more downtime, shorter asset life, and lost competitive advantage.

Anne: Why is this moment timely for the U.S. market?

Ville: Complexity and criticality. Modern roofs host solar panels, HVAC, telecom, and energy systems. Beneath those roofs are mission-critical operations—data centers, automated logistics, precision manufacturing. Technology now allows us to detect and act before small issues escalate. The combination of complexity and capability creates urgency.

Anne: How does European experience shape your approach in the U.S.?

Ville: Operating across Europe taught us that trust precedes scale. When introducing novel technology, credibility is essential. Long-term relationships outperform transactional sales.

VILPE is a 50+ year roofing and ventilation specialist integrating digital capability into a deeply rooted industry. We speak the language of roofers, facility managers, and industrial operators—which matters when building durable U.S. partnerships.

Anne: Finally, what is VILPE’s ambition in the U.S., and how will it contribute to this market?

Ville: Our ambition is to lead the digitalization of the building envelope in the U.S. and become the trusted authority in intelligent roof protection.

We bring value to American industry by:

  • Enhancing operational resilience
  • Extending asset lifespans
  • Empowering smarter, safer maintenance
  • Reducing waste through sustainable building practices

With five decades of roofing expertise now enhanced with digital monitoring, we’re not replacing craftsmanship—we’re empowering it. Our goal is simple: make roof performance predictable, so industrial and commercial leaders can focus entirely on growing their business. When the roof is doing its job, no one needs to think about it. Intentional execution ensures it stays that way.

Anne: Ville, thank you for this insightful discussion. Your perspective on operational resilience and predictive roof protection highlights how critical building envelope performance truly is for American industry. We wish you and your team all the best and great success in the U.S. market. It’s exciting to see VILPE helping organizations protect their assets, reduce risk, and build stronger, more resilient operations.
